When Laura came to learn about the news of Mr Scott’s death from the Godber’s deliveryman, she was shocked and immediately decided to cancel the garden party out of respect for the family of the deceased. According to her, it would be very inconsiderate to enjoy the music and merriment of such an extravagant garden party while the members of the mourning family lives nearby.
After receiving the news, Laura first approached her sister Jose and then her mother Mrs Sheridan with the thought of cancelling the party.
Both Jose and Mrs Sheridan remained indifferent to Mr Scott’s death news. In Jose’s opinion, cancelling the party over such a trivial matter as the death of a working class member would be unnecessary. Nobody expected them to do anything about it. Similarly, Mrs Sheridan also dismissed Laura’s proposal to cancel their garden party as she believed that the poor don’t expect sacnfices from the rich. Both mother and daughter treated the death news as any other normal news, which indicates their uncaring attitude and lack of empathy towards the working class people.
